Open Educational Resources (OERs)

For the 2018-2019 school year, the O'Grady Library, with funding from the Kathleen O'Grady Innovation Fund, is offering five $100 stipends to encourage faculty to find and review open education resources (OERs) that they could use in their teaching and one $750 stipend to help a faculty member actually adopt and/or adapt an OER for a course.

Below is a copy of the introduction and description from the proposal submitted for the stipends.

Review Stipend

Below are the requirements for the Review Stipend, followed by a link to the application:

This $100 stipend has been created to encourage faculty to explore using OERs in their instruction. Up to five stipends will be awarded in spring 2019. This award is open to both tenure-track and adjunct faculty members.
 
Stipend recipients will be required to complete the following by June 1, 2019:
  • Schedule a consultation with the Information Literacy Librarian to discuss review process and conduct a preliminary search.
  • Select an OER textbook or three related modules that could be used for a class.
  • Write a brief review of the resource(s), using the Open Textbook Library review criteria    (https://open.umn.edu/opentextbooks/reviews/rubric).
  • Submit a brief reflection on how you might use and/or modify the resource(s) for your course, how it might impact your course design, and an estimate of cost savings for students based on your most recent course text and typical enrollment.

Adoption Stipend

 
Below are the requirements for the Adoption Stipend, followed by a link to the application:
 
This $750 stipend has been created to encourage faculty to adopt/adapt an OER for use in a course.  This stipend is available for both tenure-track and adjunct faculty members.
 
The stipend recipient will be required to do the following:
 
By June 15, 2019, $250
  • Set up a consult with the Information Literacy Librarian to discuss the adoption process and conduct a preliminary search.
  • Select a usable textbook.
  • Provide an initial statement that includes the following:
  1. Tell what textbook you will be replacing and a brief statement on your use of it in the past (when you selected it, strengths and weaknesses, student reaction, etc.).
  2. Tell what your criteria for selecting an open textbook is—you may want to consider the Open Textbook Library review criteria to help guide your evaluation of the resource (https://open.umn.edu/opentextbooks/reviews/rubric).
  3. Include your thoughts/predictions on how adopting an OER could affect your course design (we are interested in learning about how adopting OER affects work flow and course planning.).
  4. Include an estimated cost savings for students based on projected enrollment.
By September 15, 2019 (if adopting for fall 2019) or February 3, 2020 (if adopting for spring 2020), $250
  • Provide a copy of the syllabus.
  • Provide a brief statement on how the selection affected your course design, readings, assignments, etc. 
By January15, 2020 (if adopting for fall 2019) or June 15, 2020 (if adopting for spring 2020), $250   
  • Provide a brief report on your experience using an OER that includes the following:
  1. Tell how using an OER actually affected how your class ran—readings, discussion, etc. 
  2. Tell how using an OER affected student learning/success. 
  3. Give an estimated cost savings for students, based on actual enrollment.
  4. Include a reflective statement on your experience, including “lessons” for others interested in using OERs
