ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer) is generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool released by OpenAI in November 2022. Like other generative AI tools, it draws from massive datasets to create "unique" responses to prompts entered by users. The tool has received a great deal of attention because it aims to create human-like and conversational responses and it does so reasonably well. Some educators have had very anxious responses to it, fearing that all students will rely on it for writing assignments; other educators are calling for the profession to learn to teach with the tool, to make it pedagogically relevant and also to us it ethically. This research guide has been created to give the SMU community resources for learning about ChatGPT, its strengths and weaknesses, so that we can approach this tool from a position of understanding rather than from one of fear or confusion.
