Collection assessment: Methods

Faculty, we want to hear from you!  Your expertise is invaluable in determining items for retention, replacement, or removal.  Please review the spreadsheets attached to each subject area and submit feedback!

Collection assessment criteria:

the librarians will be using CREW: A Weeding Manual for Modern Libraries (2012), as a framework of guidelines to follow for this project.  This is a standard framework developed to help guide collection maintenance projects, making the “[removal] of outdated and unused materials” more efficient and transparent (CREW, 2012, p. 12)

A key aspect of CREW is MUSTIE, a set of criteria for assessing materials for keeping or withdrawing materials:

Misleading—factually inaccurate
Ugly – worn beyond mending or rebinding [or extensively marked up by users]
Superseded – by a new edition of/or by a much better book on the subject
Trivial – of no discernible literary or scientific merit
Irrelevant – no longer pertinent to the needs and interests of the library’s community
Elsewhere – the material is easily obtainable from another library

Additionally, the CREW method stipulates that materials should also be evaluated based on age and circulation/usage; suggesting that the guidelines be expressed as: #/#/MUSTIE (CREW, 2012, p. 57).  So a guideline that reads 10/5/MUSTIE signifies that materials which are 10 years or older, which have not been circulated/used in the past 5 years, and which fail the MUSTIE criteria would be eligible for being pulled from the collection. These statistics are listed on each individual subject area page.
