Transfer student library introduction

Introduction

picture of a student studyingWelcome to this introduction to library resources entitled Key Aspects of the College Research Environment.  This guide has two modules: the first explains important aspects of the college research environment, while the second addresses using Saints search (the library's online catalog), with the idea that the concepts can improve searching in other databases and also introduces research guides.  The first module addresses significant concepts about the college research information environment that students need to be aware of, concepts that can hopefully clarify our professors' requirements about information sources.  The second module is more practical.  We recommend that you go through both sections so that the context of using library tools can make more sense to you.

You will notice that there are links for a pre-quiz and a post-quiz for the first module; we recommend that you do these quizzes for two reasons: first, because research shows that quizzes and tests can actually help create better learning [1] and secondly because it can help us with evaluating and improving this set of modules.

The first module covers the following concepts:

  • The different types of information sources
  • Finding and recognizing scholarly information sources
  • Evaluating information sources

The second module covers the following concepts:

  • Understanding results and item screens
  • Using date, availability, item type, and subject filters
  • Understanding what is available on research guides

Additionally, there are guided notes for each each module, which is another high-impact practice for better learning. [2]
