Construction of whiteness

Picture of Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum"Most of the White people I talk to either have not thought about their race and so don't feel anything, or have thought about it and felt guilt and shame."

One of the most important areas of contemporary research on race is understanding how whiteness is constructed and maintained.  In the U.S., it is a driving force behind the social structure and culture that underlies institutions and laws, a force that promotes privilege for some and disadvantage for too many.  For those of us who are not persons of color, it is crucial that we work to understand our whiteness, how it affects our life opportunities and then how to challenge it in ourselves and institutions we engage with; then, we need try to help other Whites to see and challenge it.  The hope is that once we can see and dismantle to power of whiteness, we will be better able to create a more equitable set of social and institutional relationships.
