Conducting an Advanced Search in Saints Search

How to Guide:

  1. to get started, navigate to the Saint Search homepage
  2. to the right of the search box, select the “Advanced Search” link
  3. in the search box labeled “Enter a search term”, enter the desired search terms to find items by keywords (any field), title, author/creator, subject, MESH (medical subject heading), genre, ISSN, and ISBN. Searching by keyword is the default option.
  4. Adjust the search limiters and filters to meet your desired requirements by adding more keywords or concepts.
    1. Available limiters and filters include:
      1. Field selectors: Title, Author/contributor, subject, MESH, genre, ISSN, ISBN, and Call Number
    2. Search type: is (exact), contains, or starts with
    3. Publication date start and end range
    4. Language
    5. Format (print books, eBooks, articles, journals, etc.)
    6. Boolean Operator (AND, OR, NOT)
  5. By default, you are given two lines for search terms. If additional keywords or concepts are required, select the “+ add a new line” button.
  6. After all advanced search terms, limiters, and filters are selected, select the “Search” button on the bottom right of the search window.
  7. Review search results.

Add a new line

you can include a maximum of seven search criteria lines containing the following parameters: operator, field selector, search type, and search box.

 

Search type

this allows you to direct how your search terms are compared against the search field.

is (exact): results contain phrases that exactly match the phrase specified in the query (search)

contains: results that contain all words in the phrase. The words may be in a different order that what is listed, and may not be close together.

Starts with: results containing words that start with the phrase entered.

 

Operators

you can include the operators AND, OR, and NOT to specify the operation between search lines. Left-to-right precedence is applied between search phrases as well as in the case of multiple operators.

 

Wildcards

? - enter a question mark to perform a single character wildcard search. For example, enter wom?n to search for records containing woman, women, etc.

* - enter an asterisk to perform a multiple character wildcard search. For example, type cultur* to search for records containing culture, cultural, culturally, etc.

Step 1
