General guidelines for Biology collection assessment:

Consider removal if:

• Life Sciences

  • 7 (years of age)/3 (years since most recent use)/MUSTIE guidelines

• Genetics/Genetic Engineering, Human Biology, Evolution

  • 5 (years of age)/2 (years since most recent use)/MUSTIE guidelines

• Botanical Sciences

  • 5 (years of age)/3 (years since most recent use)/MUSTIE guidelines

Retain indefinitely classics in the field replacing with updated editions as wear warrants. Weed titles on ecology that appear dated, even if the information is still accurate. Watch for books that are sensational in tone. Weed books that lack color illustrations or that appear dated. Be aware of field guides that promote edible or medicinal plants and herbs to ensure that they meet safety guidelines (Crew, 2012, p. 59).
