*Social Sciences: Background sources

Why use background sources?

Encyclopedias and other background sources can provide useful context for a topic -- but they do not report on original research or provide analysis.

Using a background source early in your research process can save you time.  In addition to providing a general understanding of the topic(s), you can get leads on:

  • Terms to use when searching databases
  • Names of key individuals or researchers
  • Provide links (or "see also") references to related topics
  • Often include a bibliography or recommended readings

Social Work Speaks

social work speaks cover Social Work Speaks  contains the policy statements of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) on a wide range of public policy and professional issues. Each topic section includes an issue statement to provide background information, the policy statement, and a list of references. It is a great starting point for social work research.
