The Squaxin Island Tribe is the designated name of seven bands of Indigenous peoples that were grouped together by the US government by the Medicine Creek Treaty of 1854. The bands lived along rivers and inlets of the Salish Sea for thousands of years. The tribe refers to itself as "The People of the Water." Before contact with Europeans, ate a variety of fish, local wildlife, and plants and cultivated medicinal gardens. Like many tribes, the seven bands were decimated by European diseases. According to the 2020 Census, there are 509 Squaxin Island tribal members living on and off reservation.[1] Like other tribes in the area, they are engaged in language, community, and environmental revitalization efforts.
